Christ Church

CHRIST CHURCH

Five Signers of the Declaration of Independence:
BENJAMIN FRANKLIN (1706-1790)
FRANCIS HOPKINSON (1737-1790)
JOSPEH HEWES (1733-1799)
GEORGE ROSS (1730 1779)
DR. BENJAMIN RUSH (1745-1813)

History:
In 1719 the Christ Church purchased 2 acres of land on the outskirts of a town. At the corner of 5th and Arch streets. The burials grounds became the final resting place for more than 4000 members of the Christ Church, including 5 signers of the Declaration of Independence. Benjamin Franklin, Joseph Hewes, Francis Hopkinson, George Ross, Dr. Benjamin Rush.

There is proof that Benjamin Franklin sat in the double pew labeled 56, with his family. Above this pew, was a crest of King James, but only half of it was placed, showing that the government had power, not just the King.

Also:
At the right corner of the Church, the entrance door which is barred, was the entrance for the King whenever he came to church. The rebels barred it, preventing the King from entering.

Above the pews, on the second floor is an incredible organ. The organ was so massive that they had to place another balcony to support it.

The chandelier that hangs above the pews were only lit for certain occasions, such as the wedding of Benjamin's Franklins daughter.
